Maintaining the Exterior of Your Vehicle This Spring

reen brush washing red carThe exterior of your vehicle is what everyone sees when you are driving down the road. You want it to look its best. Springtime means getting that excess dirt and grime off of the vehicle, as winter can cause a lot of dirt buildup. This is especially true when the weather gets too cold to wash the vehicle without the concern of doors and windows freezing. If you are trying to figure out how to make sure the exterior of your vehicle is in tip-top shape, here are a few places to look.

Start With the Obvious

To start, walk around your vehicle and look at it. You want to make sure that nothing obvious stands out. If one of your tires is bald, replace it. If your tires haven’t been rotated in some time, make sure to get that taken care of this spring. Fill each tire to the appropriate amount of pressure, and inspect them to make sure nothing foreign is sticking out of them that could cause a flat or a blowout. You also want to inspect the tires in different places of your driveway. Look at them where they are, then move your vehicle forward a few inches and do it again. That will let you look at the entire tire, and let you notice if they are wearing evenly. If you notice they’re uneven in terms of how much tread the tires have, go in and get them rotated before doing any more significant trips.

Check Out Your Wipers

People often underestimate the importance of functional wiper blades until the moment they need them and they aren’t functioning properly. Take a look at your wiper blades. They often need to be replaced every 6-12 months. If you aren’t sure when they were replaced last, that’s a sign they need it. Look for cracks, tears, or missing chunks of the blade. If you notice any issues, go into your local Oakley Napa auto parts store and pick up a new set before the next spring rain.

Damage to Your Vehicle’s Paint

If you notice small scratches or chips in your vehicle’s paint, make sure you get it looked at. You should get it repainted if possible, but until you can get in to have that done, you have another option. Cover any small cuts, scratches, or chips with a little clear nail polish from the drug store. It’s a quick, cheap, and easy fix that will last long enough for you to get your paint job touched up.

Give Your Vehicle a Really Good Bath

When you have addressed all of the rest of the issues with your vehicle, give it a long, luxurious bath. It needs it! Winter gets your vehicle covered in dust, dirt, and all sorts of grime from the streets. Giving it a really good bath can get all of those off of your vehicle’s exterior, and allow your vehicle to be safer and look great. If you can, make sure to wax the exterior once it has gotten clean. That will make it easier to get clean next time, plus it will keep your vehicle protected from outside damage.

Don’t neglect the outside of your vehicle because you really only look at the inside. Take the time to make sure the entire thing looks nice. This does a lot to help keep your vehicle running well, plus it reduces the potential damage that can come from rust and dirt buildup.
